Pike County Area Information

Coal was discovered in the county in 1860 and remains one of the county's major industries. Two power plants operate in Petersburg. Pike County is the site of the largest family owned trucking company in the state.

Recreation areas include 20 miles of wetland for beauty and sport. Some of these recreation activities may include the Pike County State Forest. It offers hunting, fishing, hiking, picnicking horse trails and camping on 2,914 areas. Sugar Ridge Fish and Wildlife Area offers more than 100 lakes and 7,400 acres of wildlife for hunting, fishing, and camping in the southern part of Pike County. Prides Creek Park is a beautiful 200 acre park with a 90 acre lake in the northern part of the county.
