Welcome To Pike County
Indiana
Pike
County was the first county formed after statehood; being organized on February
1, 1817. The county was named for General Zebulon M. Pike, who found the
source of the Mississippi River and discovered Pike's Peak. Petersburg is
the county seat.
Pike County is situated in the
southwestern section of the state. It is bounded on the north by Knox and
Daviess, on the east by Dubois, on the south by Warrick and on the west by
Gibson counties. It contains 336.2 square miles, part of which is hilly,
while the western part is rolling.
Coal was discovered in the county in
1860 and remains one of the county's major industries. Two power plants
operate in Petersburg and Otwell is the site of the largest family owned
trucking company in the state.
Recreation areas include 20 miles of
wetland for beauty and sport. The Pike County State Forest offers hunting,
fishing, hiking, picnicking, horse trails and camping on 2,914 acres. Sugar
Ridge Fish and Wildlife Area offers more than 100 lakes and 7,400 acres of
wildlife for hunting, fishing and camping in southern Pike County. Prides
Creek Park is a beautiful 200 acre park, with a 90 acre lake in the northern
part of the county.
