Pike County was organized on February 1, 1817 being the first county formed after statehood. Petersburg is the county seat of Pike County. The county was named for General Zebulon M. Pike. General Pike found the source of the Mississippi River and dicovered Pike's Peak.

Pike County is situated in the southwestern section of the state. The adjacent counties include: Daviess County (northeast), Dubois County (east), Warrick County (south), Gibson County (west), and Knox County (northwest). It consists of 341 square miles (883 km) of which, 336 square miles (871 km) of it is land and 5 square miles (13 km) of it is water. The total area is 1.44% water within our peaceful rolling hills.

Cities and towns include Petersburg, Spurgeon, Winslow, Otwell, Stendal and Velpen. The population in 2000 was 12,837 with a density of 38/sq mile (15/km). The time zone is Eastern. The major highways currently include Indiana State Roads 56, 57, 61 and 65 and will include Interstate 69.
